Carbon-neutral industry: Developments in adapting to climate change and its mitigation as well as implications for value creation and employment in selected energy-intensive sectors

The international and national climate protection targets and the policies geared to them have been a relevant framework for the development of industry in Germany for around two decades. At the level of individual industrial sectors and companies, very different adaptation reactions are conceivable, such as improvements in resource efficiency, the use of end-of-pipe technologies, a change in input materials, changes in the range of products and services or even a move to locations outside Germany (carbon leakage). Possible options include incremental adjustments that can be implemented at short notice, as well as disruptive innovations with a greater need (also in terms of time) for further research and development.
